Curious about the controversies surrounding AI-generated art? This workshop explores the problems, possibilities, and powers of image generation from text, especially for the purposes of collaboratively making art with AI by teaching it to fail. While a common mode of making art with tools like stable diffusion is to imagine the machine as accepting instructions -- Tell it to make a still life in oil and it will (ideally) generate one. We’re not going to do that. We are going to give it instructions it can’t follow and see what happens.

About the Speaker: Adam Hyland is a PhD Student at the University of Washington's Human Centered Design & Engineering, and interested in the structure and nature of collaboration within and among systems characterized by high demands for reliability. He has a BA in Economics from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and several years of experience in software development and nuclear power plant operation.
